How does a heat pump work?

A heat pump uses the energy in the ambient air (Air heated by the sun) and transfers that heat to water using a heat exchanger.  Let’s say the air temp is 15 deg C. So how does 15 Deg air heat water to a temperature that can be used in the house?  Pressure! And lots of it.

The heat pump has a fan that blows the air past a radiator (like the one in your car) and the radiator transfers the heat in the air to a refrigerant gas.  The gas is now 15 Deg.  The gas is then pumped through a compressor and pressurised. As the gas is pressurised, the temperature in the pressurised gas increases. The gas is pressurised to a point where the temperature of the gas is 65 Deg C! The 65 Deg C heat is then transferred to water using a heat exchange. The hot water is then transferred to the hot water storage tank for later use.

Using a refrigerant gas and a compressor it is possible to multiply the energy input by a factor a 5. I.e., an efficient heat pump can produce 5 times more energy (in the form of heat) than the energy used (electricity) to run the machine. Sounds like magic?  NOPE. Just a smart way to use electricity if what you need is heat or hot water.  Your fridge uses this same principle but in reverse. It takes heat from the food and expels it out of the fridge through the radiator in the back.  Food/ external heat source heats the fridge, heat is transferred to a gas, gas is pressurised and therefore increasing the temperature differential compared to the ambient air,  heat is transferred to the ambient air.  Everything is trying to be the same temperature all the time. Heat will transfer freely.

Eco C02 Heat Pumps from Red Circle Solar

A solar heat pump is an incredibly energy efficient way of heating your water. If you install one, you’ll notice a reduction in your energy bills, and you’ll also be playing an important role in ensuring that our environment is safer and healthier.

If you decide to invest in a solar hot water pump, you’ll want to ensure that you’re working with the very best in the business. This will mean you get the very best equipment and materials possible, as well as the best service at the best price. Here’s a closer look at why Red Circle Solar is the best partner for you and how our solution works.

The Benefits of a Sanden Eco Heat Pump

The Sanden eco heat pump is one of the most sophisticated on the market, and it is capable of producing 4500 watts of energy using just 900 watts of input. This amazing output is possible due to the use of a compressor which extracts ambient heat from the air and passes it through a CO2 heat exchanger. This compressed gas increases the pressure, which in turn increases the temperature of the gas. This heat is passed to the water that is stored within the tank.

A Sanden eco heat pump is an elegant solution that helps to reduce your energy bills. It can be coupled with your existing PV solar power system to achieve further improvements, and you’ll see how the solution clearly works to improve your environmental footprint.

The Sanden Eco Heat Pump — Saving You Money as well as Protecting the Environment

With Australian electricity prices already high and likely to increase further, saving money on your energy bills is a prime aim. At the same time, you don’t want to make your life less comfortable and nor do you want to harm the environment.

The perfect solution is the Sanden eco heat pump system that provides all the hot water you need at a fraction of the cost of conventional methods. It also heats your water in an environmentally friendly way so you’ll have a clear conscience as well as a healthier bank balance.

Eco Heat Pumps - The Efficient Way to Heat your Water

Whereas a conventional system will use electricity directly to heat your water, an eco heat pump makes use of natural resources by extracting heat from the air and using that instead. The only electricity usage is therefore to power the fan that forces the warm air through an evaporator, the compressor that increases the pressure and temperature, and the pump that moves hot water from the heat exchanger to the storage tank.

The outcome of this process is that electricity usage is typically 80% less than for traditional methods, the system having a high Coefficient of Performance of 5.96. This means that only 0.84 kW of energy is needed to generate 4.99 kW of heat, leading to considerable savings in electricity costs.

The savings don’t stop there because the efficiency and environmental friendliness of the system earns it the highest level of Small-scale Technology Certificates (STCs) and makes it eligible for government incentives and rebates.

And none of the savings are due to a lowering of standards because the system is of the highest quality with a six year parts and labour warranty for the eco cO2 heat pump and fifteen years for the stainless steel storage tank. Nor does it suggest reducing efficiency since the system takes only four hours to heat water from 16 to 63⁰C with ambient air temperatures of 20⁰C, up to 50% faster than conventional electric systems.

Simple Installation and Sustainable Operation with an Eco CO2 Heat Pump

A heat pump works like a refrigerator in reverse and uses ozone friendly R744 (CO2) as its refrigerant to absorb the heat. Using less energy, with no backup/booster element needed, results in fewer emissions while the external heat pump operates at an ultra quiet 37 dB so it’s kind to your neighbours as well.

The split system, with its exterior heat pump and interior hot water tank, is easy to install by a qualified electrician and plumber without the need for a refrigeration mechanic. The two units can be up to fifteen metres apart horizontally or three metres vertically, giving great flexibility in siting.

The stainless steel hot water tank is fully insulated to reduce heat loss and comes in four sizes — from 160 litres for 2-4 people up to 315 litres for 4-6. Each one attracts STC rebates and all but the smallest are suitable for off-peak as well as continuous tariffs to take advantage of cheaper electricity prices.

The pump unit is fully weather resistant and has in-built freeze protection while the tank is mains pressure rated and has safety pressure and temperature relief valves. All in all, it’s a system that will give you adequate hot water at minimum cost and in an environmentally friendly manner.
